Salem UMC is a community. We are also part of the larger community of Salem! We want you to be involved in both!
Our community has people that need us in many ways, including our assistance and our prayers. Please keep checking here for announcements and opportunities to help your neighbors (and beyond)!
If you know of a need or would like to serve in this area, please contact the office (729-4551) or email: email@example.com.
Love Pack Ministry
Love Pack Ministry is a community group organized to feed hungry children in Dent County. Volunteers meet on Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings during the school year to fill backpacks of food that are then delivered to schools in Dent County. This is funded by contributions from the community.
The Community Garden
The Garden is located on the back of the church parking lot. This is a project sponsored by the University of MO Extension and our church. It provides space for individuals to plant and care for a garden. Healthy fruits and vegetables are grown and harvested by individuals and families that participate. Educational demonstrations are held at the garden. School children tour the garden to learn about growing vegetables.
Back to School Fair
Partners in the community work together to help with the Back to School Fair. It is held just prior to school opening. It works well in our Church facility as registration, health screening, and special support groups set up in the upper level. Health checks, underwear and socks are provided to the children. Youth are screened by South Central Community Action Agency on qualifications of income and need. Backpacks and school supplies are distributed in the lower level.
87 Volunteers worked on 17 different projects during SERVE 2014 on Sept 8th. Weeds and shrubs were trimmed, trash removed, landscapes cleaned and mulched, tree limbs removed and many other projects were completed. The community was a much neater and cleaner place as a result. More projects were scheduled for later in the year.
Salem Head Start Program
Support is given to the Head Start program all school year. Monthly dinner meetings for parents and children held in the Church Fellowship Hall have been very successful. Parents and children meet just prior or following the dinner. Parent involvement is essential for a child’s success in school.
Trunk or Treat
Provides a safe and fun place for children and families to go on Halloween night. Car trunks are decorated and treats given to kids. The Shriner Clowns help provide entertainment for those that attend. 3,000 + people usually come to the Church parking lot for this event.
The Tiger Trail opened in September 2014. The trail is 1.5 miles long and serves the community as a great place to walk, run or bike. Two wooden park benches were furnished by SUMC as a part of the community partnership.
Volunteers in Mission (VIM)
Volunteers in Mission (VIM) is a ministry of the Missouri Area United Methodist Church coordinated by the Office of Creative Ministry. It seeks to make a Christian difference by sharing the love of Christ through our participation in short-term mission activities.
Our participation may be only a few block away, within Missouri, our UM jurisdiction, the nation, or even the world! One of the most powerful VIM missions is working with our sister-congregation in Dondo, Mozambique. If being a VIMer sound like something you’re called into, please prayerfully consider it!
